If I had to sum up years of searching for the perfect way to make money into one lesson that you should never forget, it’s in the words of my late friend and original mentor, Russ von Hoelscher (pictured here to the left...)
Decades ago, Russ told me...

"One idea can make you $1 million."

Russ passed away in 2025, but this one lesson he shared with me truly changed my life.

It cost me $2,500 (about $6,250 in today’s dollars) to learn it.  But I’ll never forget it.  And I’m going to freely share it with you right here. Are you ready? Here it is...

When we first met marketing expert Russ Von Hoelscher, my wife Eileen and I were already making more money than we had ever made before. We had started in 1988 with just a few hundred dollars and a simple idea to sell a small booklet we created. It worked. We were bringing in about $500 a day (about $1,250 today), which felt incredible at the time.

Then we hired Russ to do some consulting with us, to help us make even more money.

We paid him $2,500 to fly from his home in southern California to come spend a weekend with us at our little Kansas farmhouse. We picked him up at the airport that day, and on the drive home, he casually said the words that I will never forget. He said “You know, T.J. and Eileen...”​​​​​

The weekend hadn’t even started. We were just making small talk on the 60-minute drive from the airport to our farmhouse in rural Kansas. But what he said hit me hard.

You see, I had always dreamed of making millions of dollars. But hearing how it could happen from someone who had already done it made it instantly more real. I got so excited I almost drove the car off the road. I’m sure I left skidmarks on the rural highway we were heading down.

The rest of the weekend was spent sharing plans and ideas, getting coaching, and building the beginnings of what would become a lifelong friendship. He left on Sunday with a promise from all three of us that it would be the first of many such weekends together. (And it was!)

Russ kept working with us after that weekend, and about nine months later, a simple idea hit me while I was in the shower. (Isn’t that where the best ideas come from?!?) It was a pretty simple idea, but I knew our customers would love it. When I got out of the shower, I called Russ right away. He loved the idea, too, and over the next several days we hashed out the details and he helped us put it all together.

And sure enough, that one idea made us well over $1 million when the dust settled.

We’ve turned lots of ideas into big profits over the years, but I’ll never forget that first time Russ shared this secret with us from the back of our little car when we met him for the first time. Lots of ideas can product a little profit. And some ideas products thousands in profits. But it really does take just one idea to bring in a million dollars.

And that’s the point. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Million-dollar ideas are a lot harder to come by.  You don’t need hundreds of ideas. You just need one good one—combined with the right people and the right plan to make it happen.

Russ helped us believe it was possible, because he had already done it. That’s an important part of the process. It’s easy t find people who will tell you why an idea won’t work. You need people who know how to make it work because they’ve already done it.

In the early days of our journey, Russ became that person for us. And now we want to do the same thing for you.

"Nobody gets rich by themselves."

A lot of successful entrepreneurs like to act like they made it all alone. And yes, many successful people do have strong qualities—things like high vision, ambition, and drive—but the truth is clear: Nobody gets rich alone, and nobody gets rich by accident.

Every successful person had help. They got involved in the right opportunities, with the right people, at the right time. Behind every success story is a team—even if you never see or hear about them.

I’m living proof of that. And I’m happy to spill the tea.

My story is of humble beginnings. I wasn’t born with advantages. I dropped out of high school. I struggled with drugs and alcohol until I was 21. It took years to turn my life around. I’m a true rags-to-riches success story.

But I had one thing that some people never discover—I caught the vision. I desperately wanted more out of life.

So I got into sales early in adulthood. I tried different business ideas and opportunities. During that time, I met my wife, Eileen. It didn’t take long to realize that she truly believed in me. But she also wasn’t afraid to tell me the truth. She could see that many of the programs I was buying were garbage. They had no real value.

But where others would just criticize, she saw potential. Instead of tearing me down, she helped me think better.

In 1988, we started our own small business with just $300. We combined a few ideas, added our own improvements, and created something better. We wrote a simple booklet and began selling it. We were already doing well when we met Russ von Hoelscher, who helped us scale the business to new heights.

Within that five years, we had generated more than $10 million in revenue and built a solid foundation of 160,000 customers. The part I’m most proud of...  We made our money by helping other people make money.

And as I said, we didn’t do it alone.

Eileen was my first mentor. She ran our company for years. Along the way, we had help from many people—coaches, advisors, partners, and a growing staff. To this day, we rely on strong people. One of the best is Shelly Callahan, who has helped run our company since 2001. She’s bright, smart, and she tells the hard truth—even when it’s hard to hear. Which is a characteristic she shares with my wife to this day.

That’s what you need. Truth-tellers. Not just “yes people” who always agree with you—but people who help you get better.

So remember this:

Nobody gets rich alone.

Nobody gets rich by accident.

It takes the right opportunity, the right people, and the right plan.

And if you’re willing to stick with it and refuse to give up, you can succeed.

Trust me when I say that you are not that different from the people who have already made their millions. They just got started, stayed with it, and surrounded themselves with the right people.

You might recognize that historic quote from the late, great Zig Ziglar. I used to listen to him all the time, and his motivational messages helped change my life. His videos are still out there, and they are worth watching, even if you’ve already seen them before.

For a season, I thought motivation didn’t matter. I got deep into marketing and believed that skills and techniques were all that counted. I started thinking motivation was a waste of time.

I was wrong.

Dan Kennedy says it like this: You have to work harder on yourself than you do on your business. It’s so true.

You really need both. You need the right marketing skills and implementation, of course. But you also need inspiration, vision, and the drive to keep going. Especially when things are tough.

Motivation keeps you moving. Marketing helps you grow. You need both to succeed.

This idea became the foundation of my business back in 1988. We even put that great Zig Ziglar quote on the back of our first booklet we sold. That one idea helped us build something real.

The principle is simple: You succeed by helping others succeed. If you want to help people, show them how to improve their lives. Show them how to make more money. That’s real help.

That’s what entrepreneurship is all about.

It doesn’t matter where you came from. I was a high school dropout. I struggled. I had problems. But I turned my life around, learned new skills, and kept going.

Anyone can do that.

As entrepreneurs, we create value for the marketplace. We help people. And when we do that, we get rewarded. The more value you create, the more you earn.

It’s a win-win.

You make your money by helping people.

That’s the foundation.

Absolutely, yes. All our monthly letters are archived here by date. And you can read a lot of other articles and get a lot more information here that's not available in the printed edition each month. Bookmark this site and return often to check out the newest information.
